I was so pleased to be invited to conduct the Western Wisconsin Music Conference 2025 High School Honor Band, and to write a piece for the occasion. An overture-style piece with a celebratory mood, along with an expressive lyrical was requested. Living in Illinois, I look to Wisconsin as a northern neighbor, and therefore being in the far northern part of our country led me to the title of True North. Knowing that the term "true north" has a  meaning of representing one's authentic self, and being guided by core values and a sense of purpose, I felt this positive message would resonate with the students as well as the audience. Music has always been my "north star," helping me find meaning and joy in my life, while always connecting me to wonderful and talented friends and colleagues. My hope is this title might encourage the band members to always be a joyful, contributing member to the music community, and allow music to help them find their own true north.
