Begins as a tone poem depicting the Illinois River and the peaceful Indian tribes that lived in the area. The tempo of the music quickens as the tribe seeks refuge from their enemies and then the piece reaches it’s climax at the peak of the battle. The music subsides as the ill-fated tribe is finally starved into defeat.
