When asking me to write this piece, Jennifer wanted it to be a lighthearted collection of
styles that she thought middle school bands would enjoy playing. She specifically mentioned music in the style of the Blues Brothers with its catchy riffs and rhythms, power ballades of the 60's and 70's due their memorable melodies and harmonic content, and modern-day salsa music with its distinctive style and energy. Since I grew up playing this type of music as a young professional musician, performing in countless nightclubs as well as in more hotels and country clubs for wedding receptions than I can remember, I certainly understood the assignment! Bandstand is a medley of three tunes that are designed to sound like the popular music
of these eras still played in venues everywhere, giving young band students a chance to try
their hand at performing these very distinctive styles.
