Born into a large, musical family of 12 children, Dick Rischling spent over 30 years as the legendary band director of Alliance, Nebraska. Under the guidance of his band-director father, Dick and his siblings grew up immersed in music—a tradition he later passed down to his own four children. Beyond the classroom, he spent his summers roofing houses alongside his children, cementing a reputation built on faith, music, and an unshakeable work ethic. The title A Stalwart Legacy honors his moral steadfastness, patriotism, and the enduring values he modeled for his family, students, and community.
A bold, majestic fanfare opens this concert overture, instantly introducing the piece's main theme. The music then transitions into a deeply poignant yet comforting lyrical section. A march-like percussion interlude soon follows, paving the way for the low brass to state the primary motif. As the rest of the band joins in, this theme shifts through several key centers before culminating in a powerful recap of the main melody. The opening fanfare returns one final time, driving the overture to its triumphant conclusion.
